Peace III Action Plan

The purpose of the Partnerships initiative is to engage community based youth groups / organisations at local level North & South from areas of disadvantage and social exclusion in a suite of innovative accredited community relations / good relations training and development programmes underpinned by the principles of equity, diversity and interdependence.  These are designed to enable young people, youth practitioners, mentors, managers and board members to develop knowledge, skills and competences that will enable them to build relationships of peace, respect and trust, and to enable them to take their place as peace builders and active citizens within their own communities and beyond

Over the life of the YESIP initiative the Partners will deliver the suite of youth and adult programmes outlined below in Co Derry i.e. Derry City, Eglinton and Limavady, and North Donegal i.e. Moville, Mallin, Carndonagh, Buncrana, Rathmullen and Rathmelton, and in North Belfast i.e. in the electoral wards of Cliftonville, Fortwilliam, Waterworks, Ligoniel, Ballysillan, Glencairn and Highfield.

Outputs
Over the life of the project a total of 24 youth and adult peace and reconciliation training programmes will be delivered involving 480 beneficiaries.

15 of these programmes involving 300 beneficiaries will be delivered in the north and 9 programmes involving 180 beneficiaries will be delivered in the south.

Thus a 62% North / 38% South split regarding targets.

Overall Aim of the Project

Ongoing attacks indicate there is a need to address sectarian and racist behaviour. YESIP will deliver as outputs: better trained young people, improved youth work delivery on the ground; and the dissemination and sharing of good practice.   Key outcome: ‘improved community relations’ and our goal; ‘a self-sustaining sector which can support peace-building without any external assistance’.

Overall Objectives of the Project

The aim of this strategic project is to have a society free from sectarianism and racism where the Youth Education Sector can manage and sustain its own reconciliation processes.

Objective 1: Attitudinal change
“To reduce annually by 10% sectarian and racist attitudes among children & young people within the supported communities participating on the programme”.

Objective 2: Better trained young people
“To increase by 20 per year the number of young people trained to challenge sectarian and racist attitudes and actions at their local level to support conflict resolution and mediation”.

Objective 3: Dissemination of effective practice
“To deliver 8 cross community events per year informing and educating young people and youth education professionals on effective anti-sectarian and anti-racist practices “.

Objective 4: Cross Border Co-operation
“To develop more effective working relationships including support for up to 20 cross border partnerships that will improve trust and tolerance and reduce levels of sectarianism and racism within local communities”

We hope the impact of our Project will be:

At a local level?
•Improved levels of trust and tolerance among young programme participants
•Decreased levels of prejudice (beliefs and attitudes) from the baseline position to post-project analysis
•Reduction in sectarian and/or racially motivated behaviour involving participants on the Peace 3 programme.

At a regional level?

•Increase in levels of improved Good Relations as reported by adults and young people participating in the programmes supported by YESIP under Peace 3
•Increased levels of knowledge, skills and capacity to work on a cross-community basis for those adults and young people accessing revised curriculum and training materials
•Improved partnership working arrangements between the voluntary/community sector and the public sector as evidenced by the delivery of shared programmes and the sharing of training and staff development across both the formal and non-formal youth education sectors
•Improved cross-border working arrangements including all communities sharing effective practice through case studies, best practice visits, shared training materials and shared programme evaluations
