12. Make it Right September
Each month for the next year, the Commissioner for Children and Young People will be focusing on a specific theme which affects children’s rights in Northern Ireland, more details can be found here.
September’s theme is Children and Education and NICCY is calling for the government to:
1. Give schools the money and help they need
2. Agree on a fair way for children to transfer from primary to secondary or grammar schools
3. Make sure children have a say in school life
To make this campaign successful we want you to take action with any young people you’re working with and tell us about it. For advice, information and ideas on what you can do, please click here.
This month and each subsequent month will have its own specific information and resources (linked to the education and youth work curriculum) to enable you to explore the issue further with young people you work with. This month’s workshop on Newcomer children and step by step guidance can be found here.

14. Sustainable Citizenship
Confused by…….sustainability, sustainable development, climate change, global debt, sweat shops, eco friendly, credit crunch, endangered species, carbon footprints, hippies, being green, fair-trade, where it all goes when you flush the loo…and what it all means and matters, or doesn’t mean or matter to you?
Interested? Tell your youth/group leader you’d like to be a Free 6 session sustainable citizenship programme. 2-3 hour sessions full of games, activities and discussion for groups of 10-20 participants starting in September. This is a piece of Action Research for a masters in Queens University and therefore leaders, participants (and their parents) have to consent to participation. In action research participants take some control over the research; they will help to develop the programme for teenagers in the future. What you care about (or don’t care about) matters!
