Child Protection and New Technology Conference
9th March 2007 - Ramada Hotel, Belfast
This one-day conference was organised by the Cross Sectoral Child Protection Initiative and was aimed at youth workers and policy makers. The conference featured 2 speakers - Jim Gamble and William McCauley who spoke at length on the issues surrounding child protection.
Jim Gamble is Chief Executive of the
Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre and brings with him over 25 years in UK policing. -Jim’s specialist achievements have most recently centered on the fight against child sex abuse. He led the work to set up the National Crime Squad’s specialist response cell - the
Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT) - and was instrumental in forming the first international law enforcement partnership to combat child abuse online - the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT).
Jim gave a very powerful and thought-provoking insight into his work as well as information on the
thinkuknow website and training aimed at 11-15 year olds.
William J McCauley MBE is presently Strategy and Policy Co-ordinator for sex offender risk management in
Northern Ireland. (MASRAM) Formerly a Detective Chief Inspector in the Police Service of Northern Ireland he was Lead officer for Child Protection and Sexual Offences. He has performed the role of secretary to the Northern Ireland Sex Offender Strategic Management Committee since 2001. A Graduate of Portsmouth University, Willie holds a Master of Science Degree in Child Forensic Studies and a postgraduate diploma in Criminal Justice Studies. A founder member of the NOTA Northern Ireland branch and chairman of the Northern Ireland branch of Stop it Now, Willie has been involved in organising and lecturing at a number of national and international conferences, seminars and training events. He was the police representative on the steering group, which produced the manual of guidance on the assessment and management of sex offenders. Willie was awarded an MBE for child protection and public service in the Queens Birthday honours list of 2005.
